Yep, and it was the last time that cutting edge modern design was mainstream. Today, everybody wants their new houses to look like cheap pastiches of 18th century farmhouses, back then, it was OK for new things to look new.

The same thing happened to American society as a whole. Class is out the window, replaced by crass, sensationalism and instant gratification.
To be fair, other things have improved since the 1950s, among others racism and misogyny.

That car’s excess almost makes sense when viewed in profile. It just looks gloriously insane from almost any other angle.

I totally agree. In profile the one thing that is a little weird is the coves down the side.
